Vibration Plates

Can Vibration Plates help with fitness, bone density, and even lymphatic drainage?

They've been around for a while but vibration plates seem to be having another 'moment'. Originally touted as a piece of fitness kit for the gym or home, the latest ads on social media seem to be promoting claims around benefits to bone density and lymphatic drainage.

Listeners Natasha and Steve got in touch wanting to know whether all this could really be true of a single wonder product! To find out, presenter Greg Foot is joined by Dr Claire Minshull, a sports rehabilitation expert, and Professor Neil Mansfield, author of the book 'Human Response to Vibration'.

All of our episodes start with YOUR suggestions. If you’ve seen an ad, trend or wonder product promising to make you happier, healthier or greener, email us at sliced.bread@bbc.co.uk OR send a voice note to our WhatsApp number, 07543 306807.

[gentle music] Hello, I'm Greg Foot, and welcome to Sliced Bread, the show that investigates the wonder products promising to make you happier, healthier, or greener. Each episode, we follow the crumbs of evidence to find out if one of your suggested wonder products is indeed the best thing since sliced bread or marketing BS. And today's suggestion comes from not one, but two listeners, Tash and Steve Etti Edwards, who are calling in from Dubai. Welcome, you two.

  2. Tash0:27

    Hi, Greg.

  3. Greg Foot· Host0:28

    Hello, hello.

  4. Steve Etti Edwards0:29

    Hi, Greg.

  5. Greg Foot· Host0:29

Um, tell us the wonder product then that you'd like us to investigate today, and why.

  6. Steve Etti Edwards0:33

We are looking to investigate vibration plates. We have a friend here who purchased one around Christmastime, and we didn't really know what it did.

  7. Greg Foot· Host0:44

    Hmm.

  8. Steve Etti Edwards0:45

And, and we were really keen to hear what exactly the, the benefits are.

  9. Greg Foot· Host0:50

How mid-2000s of your friend. [laughs] [laughs] I mean, I remember these being all the rage back then, weren't they? But they are definitely having a resurgence, so I feel like your friend is, is very on trend. For anyone who hasn't seen one, can you describe what you saw when you walked in and you saw your friend on one of these?

  10. Steve Etti Edwards1:07

It was essentially a kind of plate on the floor. It was quite a hefty piece of kit and big enough to stand on.

  11. Tash1:16

Yeah, it had a control, and then the control basically decided how long you stayed on it for and how strong the vibrations were, depending on what you wanted from it.

  12. Greg Foot· Host1:27

[laughs] Did you try it yourself?

  13. Tash1:28

    No, we didn't.

  14. Steve Etti Edwards1:29

    We didn't.

  15. Greg Foot· Host1:29

    You didn't?
