Hugo Fry's Tips for a 2.17 Marathon, Rice Obsession & Best Running Super Shoes

4/26/202657 min

Is your obsession with the finish line actually sabotaging your race?

Elite endurance runner Hugo Fry has lived the highs of peak performance and the crushing lows of a blown race day. In this episode, he reveals the hard-earned truth that most runners ignore: the "most important week" of your training is often the one where you do the least. By exposing the mental toll of chasing a number at the cost of your life, Hugo explains why the restlessness of the taper is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Moving beyond simple mileage, he also breaks down the "formula for consistency" and why finding joy in the process is the only way to survive the marathon’s ability to humble the best. From the reality of training in Kenya to the science of injury-free progression, Hugo offers a masterclass in reclaiming your sanity while still getting faster.

[gentle music] By the way, if at any point during this interview I refer- Mm ... to us as we, it is- No, don't worry.

  2. Hugo Fry· Guest0:06

I'm not gonna take it personally.

  3. Spencer Matthews· Host0:06

    [laughs] Okay.

  4. Hugo Fry· Guest0:07

[laughs] I'm, no, I'm not that bloke.

  5. Spencer Matthews· Host0:09

    [laughs] Okay.

  6. Hugo Fry· Guest0:09

You can call me what you like.

  7. Spencer Matthews· Host0:10

It's only, it's only because, um, uh, Sam Browne- Yeah ... who's just gone out, like, used us in the same breath. And, uh, and I, I've actually never been so flattered. 'Cause I don't consider myself a good amateur or a shit pro. I'm, like, just an amateur. Like, I- I don't either, but I like, I think there's like...

  8. Hugo Fry· Guest0:30

I would describe myself as, like, um, there's a... I think it's a made-up running group called, like, sub elite.

  9. Spencer Matthews· Host0:37

Sub- Just sub elite ... sub elite?

  10. Hugo Fry· Guest0:39

Yeah. So your, your... No, no- Right ... like, sub elite is, like- [laughs] ... championship- Okay ... in London Marathon. So you've got, like, for in London, you've got, like, the elites.

  11. Spencer Matthews· Host0:47

    Yeah.

  12. Hugo Fry· Guest0:47

    Then you've got championship star.

  13. Spencer Matthews· Host0:49

    Yeah.

  14. Hugo Fry· Guest0:49

Then you've got good for age, and then you've got masses.

  15. Spencer Matthews· Host0:51

    Yeah.

  16. Hugo Fry· Guest0:52

And so, like, elite is Phil Sesman, 206 to 208 guys, down to maybe 214- Yeah ... if you're British. And then for, then you get the, like, championship guys who are, like, really good runners. You couldn't make a career out of it. The only way you make a career out of it is by putting yourself all out on the line, essentially.

  17. Spencer Matthews· Host1:15

    Yeah.

  18. Hugo Fry· Guest1:15

And then you have good for age, which is like you're a sub-three marathoner. You're a very, very, very good one, like, runner. But- That's good for age? Good for age, yeah.

  19. Spencer Matthews· Host1:23

So does it, it, it- You automatically get a place at London ... so it matters... What do you mean? So if you apply for the ballot, you just get it?

  20. Hugo Fry· Guest1:29

    Yeah, you automatically
