Explaining The Sub-2 Marathon | Stephen Scullion

5/4/202650 min

History has been made. The London Marathon just witnessed the unthinkable as the sub-two-hour barrier was finally shattered in a race for the ages. Olympic marathoner Stephen Scullion returns for an immediate, high-stakes reaction to the "perfect storm" that allowed two athletes to achieve what was once considered humanly impossible.

In this special reaction episode, Stephen breaks down the "world-news" moment when the clock started with a "one," dissecting everything from the elite fueling and shoe tech to the psychological warfare of having a rival on your shoulder.

Beyond the hype, he uses this historic milestone to challenge the "lie detector" of our own commitment, asking if we are truly willing to pay the "sacrifice tax" required to reach our own ultimate potential.

[upbeat music] We've kept in touch quite a lot since, since you came in. I feel like we talk a lot. You're like my, you're my kind of ChatGPT of, of- [laughs] ... running information. And you said, um, I, that I should do a marathon specific, like a post-London Marathon specific episode.

  2. Stephen Scullion· Guest0:24

    Yeah.

  3. Spencer Matthews· Host0:24

Uh, and, and that we should talk about the incredible scenes that, that happened in London. And I said, "How about tomorrow morning?"

  4. Stephen Scullion· Guest0:30

    Yeah, it works.

  5. Spencer Matthews· Host0:30

    And here we are.

  6. Stephen Scullion· Guest0:31

But it's hard when you're on the course to know what times people are running, and I mean, my phone just went, "What the F just happened? What the F?" Blah, blah, blah. And I was like, I, I have no idea what they're talking about, and that was clearly two athletes that just broke two hours, which is phenomenal.

  7. Spencer Matthews· Host1:02

So I was gonna ask you when you realized that they were on for the record, but you just said you, you didn't really know, you just found out, same as everyone else, essentially, when they crossed the finish line.

  8. Stephen Scullion· Guest1:10

    Yeah.

  9. Spencer Matthews· Host1:10

What was your initial reaction as an elite runner yourself when that milestone in history was broken?

  10. Stephen Scullion· Guest1:18

Yeah, like I'm... I mean, I'm watching so many races these days and all of what, you know, athletes are doing and athletes are achieving. Um, it's crazy that I probably
