Why Sexual Health Is Actually a Life-or-Death Issue with Dr. Juliana Hauser

4/20/20261 hr 15 min

What if your sexual health was as important as your heart rate? What if understanding your sexuality was the final frontier of truly knowing yourself?

In this groundbreaking conversation, Dr. Juliana Hauser—sex therapist, author of A New Position on Sex, and expert in sexual agency—challenges everything we've been taught about sexuality, pleasure, and desire.

Dr. Hauser explains why sexual wellness isn't something you add to your to-do list (if you're breathing, you're already a sexual being), and why the real work is about developing sexual agency: the skill of knowing your yeses and nos, listening to your body, and showing up authentically in all your relationships.

If you are breathing, you're sexual, so you don't actually have to put it on your to-do list, which is a, a, a wonderful thing. You are sexual by nature of being human. It's one of the few things that we all have in common. We are all sexual beings just by birthright. Like, you know, when do you ever get a standing ovation for your vulva- [laughs] ... when it, when it's not in a, in a sexual act or with a sexual partner?

  2. Stephanie Estima· Host0:20

That should be a rite of passage.

  3. Juliana Hauser· Guest0:22

[laughs] It, it really should be- [laughs] ... 'cause it's pretty amazing, to be honest.

  4. Stephanie Estima· Host0:26

    Yeah.

  5. Juliana Hauser· Guest0:27

It's like you have to look at your anatomy like you would talk about kissing. Most people will have one story, and mine is ninth grade in, in the movie theater, and I'm not gonna say his name 'cause he's a nice person, but he basically- [laughs] ... licked my face.

  6. Stephanie Estima· Host0:39

    Yeah.

  7. Juliana Hauser· Guest0:40

And, you know, it's just all [laughs] That's mine, too. Yeah. [laughs] And for women, a, a word that I use, and I'm tentative with how I use it, but I would say we have a very delicate... And delicate doesn't mean fragile, but I- Sophisticated maybe. Sophisticated, yeah.

  8. Stephanie Estima· Host0:55

    Yeah.

  9. Juliana Hauser· Guest0:55

    I like that word, too.

  10. Stephanie Estima· Host0:56

    Yeah.

  11. Juliana Hauser· Guest0:56

Elegant. W- whatever right word- Yeah ... feels that it's not bad.

  12. Stephanie Estima· Host1:01

God, wow. I'm very rarely shocked and speechless, and I'm a little speechless right now. That is unbelievable. [upbeat music] Hello, my friends. Welcome back to another episode of Better with Dr. Stephanie. It's me, your host, Dr. Stephanie Estima, and in today's episode, we are going to discover how your sexuality can literally be a case of life or death and why
