What Elite Performers Do When The Pressure Hits

4/29/202652 min

Pressure isn't coming... it's already here. This week Jake and Damian go deep into the High Performance archives to ask: what do the very best actually do when it arrives?

Featuring Chrissie Wellington on racing imperfect races perfectly, Tom Aspinall on why admitting fear beats denying it, Dan Carter on the All Blacks' hardest lesson, James Milner on what Klopp did after losing two finals, and Yaya Touré on the video Pep showed Barcelona the night before the 2009 Champions League final.

  1. Jake Humphrey· Host0:00

[upbeat music] Hi there. Welcome along to another episode of High Performance with myself and my co-host, Damian Hughes. Damian?

  2. Damian Hughes· Host0:07

Hey, Jake. How are you, mate?

  3. Jake Humphrey· Host0:09

Very well, thanks very much. I'm looking forward to this conversation actually, because we're gonna hear from Chrissie Wellington, the Ironman triathlete, Tom Aspinall, the UFC fighter who got rather nastily poked in the eye a few months ago, legendary All Black Dan Carter, James Milner, the record appearance holder in the Premier League, and Yaya Touré, who joined us recently on High Performance and gave us some serious wisdom. Um, and we're gonna be speaking to them all about dealing with pressure, handling pressure. But before we go any further, if people are watching us on Apple Podcasts, they can see where you are. If they're listening to us wherever they get their podcasts, they will not know that it looks to me like you are certainly not at home. In fact, you look like you're in a very salubrious hotel room.

  4. Damian Hughes· Host0:49

Well, I am. I'm in Shakespeare country, Jake. I'm in, um, uh, the beautiful Stratford-upon-Avon. I've come to meet a couple of mates, go out for a few beers with them, and then I've curtailed my evening to come back and chat with you.

  5. Jake Humphrey· Host1:01

    Have you honestly?

  6. Damian Hughes· Host1:02

Yeah. Honestly, 'cause- [laughs] Mate- We could have- ...

  7. Jake Humphrey· Host1:05

    professionalism ...

  8. Damian Hughes· Host1:06

we could have recorded this at another time. No, not at all. No professionalism. We've got, got a job to... As Roy Keane would say, "Do your job."

  9. Jake Humphrey· Host1:14

    Right.

  10. Damian Hughes· Host1:15

So that's what we're doing. So go on, what's going on in your world?

  11. Jake Humphrey· Host1:17

Oh, mate. Well, I mean, honestly, it's like Costa del Norfolk at the moment. The sun is out, the sky is blue. It's like twenty-five degrees every single day. It's lovely. Um, so I'm just- I'm trying to take
