[rock music] Welcome to Coach Your Brains Out, the show that explores learning and leadership from the top minds in volleyball and beyond, with your hosts, John Mayer and Billy Allen.
Billy Allen· Host0:13
How do you decide when it's time to progress or even go backwards?
Rob Gray· Guest0:18
Um, okay. I kind of use, you know, I have my kind of rule, the, my 70, 80% success rate. Um, so if it's getting way above that, then I think we need to move on, right? We're getting very close to be pretty, to be successful every rep, then it's time to progress. And then, uh, low, going down is when, you know, if I, going back and may- if maybe the habit that the movement solution we saw before was coming back, which does happen a fair amount, right? You, they, people, you fix something in practice, and then it comes back later in the game or later on. We, we c- as we kind of, uh, remedial, kind of top up, we, we go back to it.
Billy Allen· Host1:00
How do you... I'm trying to think of like, so in volleyball for instance, there's certain skills that naturally, like let's say the offense has an advantage and you can be around 70, 80%.
Rob Gray· Guest1:11
Mm-hmm.
Billy Allen· Host1:12
And then there's other skills that are really hard, like blocking or defense, where you're at a disadvantage, and it's, it'd be really hard to have them get to that, that rate unless you really like simplify it or make it easier for them.
Rob Gray· Guest1:23
Yeah.
Billy Allen· Host1:23
Um, like how do you balance that when a skill is like just, like the l- Yeah ... percentage is so low to start with?
Rob Gray· Guest1:28
That's a good question. Yeah.
