Sam Short on Sweeping the Distance Freestyles, World Record Pacing & Nutrition | Episode 304
6/26/202654 min
Australia’s distance freestyle king has returned! Fresh off a historic performance at the 2026 Australian Trials—where he became the first man since Grant Hackett to sweep the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m Freestyles—Samuel Short joins the Social Kick Podcast to break down exactly how he did it.
In this episode, Sam takes us behind the scenes of his elite training block. From brutal high-altitude camps in Flagstaff to managing his sleep and body composition with Oura Rings and dietitians, Sam leaves no stone unturned. He details exactly what he eats in a day to survive massive double sessions, why he’s taking fueling cues from pro cyclists, and what it’s actually like to train with a biomechanist yelling at you during a lactate set. We also break down Sam's race strategy.
Sam breaks down his insane 7:36 in the 800m Free, the unbelievable world record pacing of his international competitors, and why he loves racing guys who try to take the race out fast. Plus, we get into some classic swimmer debates: is it better to double-breathe off the wall or put your head down? And what is the most vulnerable World Record right now?

We have always been a nation of givers. Giving a hand, giving hope, giving possibility, giving joy, giving opportunity, giving dignity. Imagine what could happen if we all gave at the same time. Giving forth. Take the pledge and give to the causes you care about at America250.org.

We ask rapid fires to everybody who comes on this show. And if you've been on this show, we had rapid fires. But what's a rapid-fire question you would ask John and myself?
Sam Short· Guest0:37
What do you think is the easiest or most vulnerable world record right now?
John Mullen· Host0:40
Welcome to this episode of Social Kick. I'm your host, John Mullin here, and I've got a partial crew. We have Brian out in Lake Tahoe enjoying some nice weather. But Luke, Mr. Worldwide, Paddington is here, and we are excited to chat with a great performance and great meet, um, recently at Australian Trials, Mr. Samuel Short. How are you doing today?
Sam Short· Guest1:02
Hey. Hey, guys. Yeah. Good. Very good.
John Mullen· Host1:05
Good. I thought you wouldn't be doing well. I mean, the US just whooped Australia in World Cup for soccer. So how you handling that down, down under?
Sam Short· Guest1:13
Yeah, we had it on the la- on the big screen while we were training, and it was just kind of miserable just getting our, our, um, asses whooped. But, uh, you know, it was kind of expected. Um, you guys had much quality, much more quality of team. Uh, but yeah, everything else is going great, so.
Luke Paddington· Host1:27
Disappointing answer, Sam. The US got lucky.
