Eliud Kipchoge: The Philosopher of Running

5/4/202632 min

For this conversation, Jan sits down with the greatest marathoner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge. They explore the mindset that led to the historic sub-two-hour marathon and why Eliud believes that records don't belong to individuals, but to the sport itself. Eliud shares his profound wisdom on the purity of running, explaining why he still lives and cleans in a simple training camp despite his global success. They discuss the "heavy load" of preparation, how to maintain focus in an age of distraction, and his rule for the next generation. A conversation that serves as a blueprint for anyone looking to push their own boundaries, whether in sport or in life. Enjoy! Get Your Own CANYON GRAIL Ready to hit the gravel? Sometimes I'm real tired. Sometimes I don't feel like going out. Sometimes I don't feel like running. But sometimes I get out of the door, you know, and get a kid, a five-year-old kid, actually who runs and, and telling me, "No, I am running because of you."

I went to my final world championships, uh, for the IRONMAN Hawaii, having just heard about your success and being motivated and carrying this with me to the finish line. So here is my chance to personally thank you for this motivation. It turned out to be the best race of my life also. But do you sometimes just before the start line feel the weight of all this preparation? Because there are millions of people watching every race. There are millions of people counting on you to show up.

  3. Eliud Kipchoge· Guest0:46

I'm carrying a heavy load and, you know, at the starting line, I'm really feeling that load. And that's where tension comes. It's not about running very fast, but it's about starting and going beyond the finishing line. And that's why sport continues forever and forever. We don't want records. Sport want records. Everybody who is running is enjoying freedom, but if you are not running, actually you are in, in prison.

[upbeat music] Eliud, allow me to start with a personal anecdote.
