David Seaman: Ronaldinho’s Goal, Gazza’s Pain & Wenger’s Genius (E416)
6/15/20261 hr 12 min
David Seaman is one of England's greatest ever goalkeepers, with 75 caps and multiple trophies with Arsenal. In this episode he shares the moments that shaped him, many of which have never been told like this before.
David takes us from being released by Leeds United at 19 to walking out for England at the World Cup, opening up about the fear he felt after the Ronaldinho free kick and the untold story of packing Gazza's bags after he was left out of the 98 squad.
He also shares his three non-negotiables for any winning culture and a definition of high performance that traces all the way back to a nine year old kid in Rotherham being told to go in goal and never wanting to leave.
This is an honest, emotional and powerful conversation about resilience, loyalty and what it really means to love what you do.
As patron of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, David Seaman supports bowel cancer research and awareness. The Fund has raised over £31 million for research across the UK.

[gentle music] As a goalkeeper, you're literally 10 seconds away from a major mistake. No matter how well you've played in that game, you made that one mistake, that's what everybody will remember. When the ball was coming over, I was thinking to myself, "Hit the bar, hit the bar." And I heard it hit the net. And then it's like, "What's gonna happen now?" I came out of my net, Becks and Sven talking to me, but got no idea what they said to me.

Can we talk about the day that Arsene Wenger walked through the door?
David Seaman· Guest0:25
Ooh. Arsene who? [laughing] [laughing] His first week, he changed everything. And Arsene's encouraging him to pass it and play, and I'm like, "Wow." Never shouting, just little instructions every single game.
Jake Humphrey· Host0:37
Which of those three, uh, holds the best memory?
David Seaman· Guest0:43
The Euro 96 one. Yeah. 'Cause as much as it wasn't, it wasn't a successful tournament, it was, but we didn't win it. Do you know what I mean? It was, it was special. You know, we went into that under massive pressure. Um, you know, everybody wanting Gazza out the squad and all that sort of stuff, you know. It was, um, there was quite a lot of pressure going around, but then we, we draw with Switzerland in the first game, you know, so that would, even built it even more. And then, uh, and then we've [laughs] got Scotland next. So [laughs] yeah, it was, um, it was a special tournament because for me, I felt the England team made England fans love England again. You know, 'cause before, it, it was, uh, a little bit volatile.

Yeah. And what do you
