316. Why Western States 100 Records Are Getting Smashed, Z1 v. Z2 Training, AI Coaching News, and Competitiveness v. Ego!

6/23/20261 hr 42 min

It’s the best time of the year, and we brought that energy into this great episode! We started by bringing out our big predictions and hot takes for the Western States 100. The hottest take: everything about our understanding of endurance physiology is going to change on Saturday. We tell you why.

We also talked about a new study asking a fascinating question: does the intensity of easy training matter for adaptations? The answer: not really, if overall stress is equalized. Our main conclusion is that no pace is too slow for aerobic development.

And this one was full of awesome topics! Other topics: switching heart rate monitors with a training partner, our complex thoughts on AI coaching, AI body scans, new data on trail supershoes crowning a possible champion, the perils of optimization based on studies, a cool study on human-wildlife conflict, competitiveness v. ego, burping in races, and a beautiful Listener Corner message.

Whenever you’re having a bad day, remember: there might be a thicc zebra waiting for you on the carousel of life.

We love you all! HUZZAH!

Woo-hoo Welcome to the Some Work All Play podcast.

  2. David Roche· Host0:03

We are so happy to be with you today.

  3. Megan Roche· Host0:04

    Happy Tuesday.

  4. David Roche· Host0:05

    It's Tuesday.

  5. Megan Roche· Host0:05

And it's the best week of the year on this Tuesday.

  6. David Roche· Host0:08

Oh my gosh, it is. We are getting ready to take off to go see the Western States 100, to coach there, to just experience the community. I can't wait, and we're coming off of Broken Arrow, and it's your birthday on Thursday.

  7. Megan Roche· Host0:18

You just skipped over the fact that it's your birthday today.

  8. David Roche· Host0:21

    [laughs] Oh, man.

  9. Megan Roche· Host0:22

On the podcast recording. How cool is that? Was that on purpose?

  10. David Roche· Host0:25

[laughs] Yeah, that was on purpose.

  11. Megan Roche· Host0:27

You don't love your birthday, man.

  12. David Roche· Host0:28

No, no, I, I love my birthday. I just don't like celebrating myself.

  13. Megan Roche· Host0:30

    [laughs] [laughs] Yeah.

  14. David Roche· Host0:31

I wanna direct the energy other places. [laughs] Also, you know, adding rings on the tree at this point, I do feel in my body every day. So I'm like, "You know what? I'm not in a rush. I'll, I'll celebrate it a little bit in my own way, but I don't need other people to be telling me I'm getting a year older all the time."

  15. Megan Roche· Host0:45

    38 is still young.

  16. David Roche· Host0:47

Yeah. [laughs] 38. You know what they say. At 38 you really get crunk.

  17. Megan Roche· Host0:51

You're getting more slow-twitch muscle fibers every year.

  18. David Roche· Host0:53

    That's true.

  19. Megan Roche· Host0:54

    And, and getting crunk.

  20. David Roche· Host0:55

[laughs] And crunk, and crunk. My foot's crunk, that's for sure.

  21. Megan Roche· Host0:57

    Yeah.

  22. David Roche· Host0:57

[laughs] Uh, yeah, it's gonna be so fun. I can't wait to go to Western States with you.

  23. Megan Roche· Host0:59

This is, like, seriously the best week of the year, and to top it all off, I feel like we've gotta balance it out. We have children, two, two toddlers at this point, tantruming at the same time.

  24. David Roche· Host1:08

Oh, yeah, that was really impressive last night. It was, like, mutual, simultaneous, not a good thing- [laughs] ... but tantrums. Um, yeah, it is a vibe in life, and I feel like that's one reason that I'm feeling older, [laughs] honestly, is parenting is just a lot, and it makes that extra ring feel like, I don't know, it comes with some scars.

  25. Megan Roche· Host1:27

[laughs] Last night, both kids were screaming at the same
