175: Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Running

6/20/202658 min

In Episode 175, Andy, Rick and Sarah turn back the clock and share the things they wish they'd known when they first started running - the lessons that would have saved them time, money and sores (the chafing veterans among you will know exactly what we mean!).

Whether you're just starting out or have been running for years, we're confident you'll either learn something new or relate to many of the stories, tips and experiences shared throughout this episode.

And were lucky enough to speak with Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt to celebrate a remarkable milestone: Parkrun's one millionth event, 22 years after it all began.

The Running Channel Podcast tackles one big topic each episode, amongst helpful tips and light-hearted chat on the latest news in the running world. Hosted by Sarah Hartley (amateur runner) and Andy Baddeley (former pro runner) alongside Rick Kelsey (recovering runner), the TRC Podcast is friendly, jargon-free, and the perfect accompaniment to your runs.

  1. Andy Baddeley· Host0:00

This episode is sponsored by Altra and their amazing range of road and trail running shoes Trail running, mate, that is all about you this year. Oh, yeah, you guys have twisted my arm a little bit, although I'm secretly quite excited. I'm taking on an epic trail race in September this year, supported by Altra.

  2. Rick Kelsey· Host0:15

Yeah, one of the things that Altra focus on really is giving your feet a bit more space to actually move about naturally.

  3. Andy Baddeley· Host0:20

They have a foot shaped toe box, which is roomier.

  4. Rick Kelsey· Host0:22

Uh, so your toes aren't all squashed together, which can make runs feel more comfortable, stable, and especially over long distances. And the idea is simple really, more room, natural movement, and hopefully happier feet on the run. Everybody needs happier feet.

  5. Andy Baddeley· Host0:37

And if you'd like to find out more about Altra and their range of shoes, then head to the link in the show notes.

  6. Sarah Hartley· Host0:41

I just ran a marathon PB using the Runner app.

  7. Andy Baddeley· Host0:44

And as you might expect, Rick couldn't even be bothered to be here. [laughs] E- even though Runner helped him to run his first marathon since major knee surgery, and to run a huge personal best compared to his first marathon a few years ago.

  8. Sarah Hartley· Host0:53

Which truly does show that Runner can train anyone.

  9. Andy Baddeley· Host0:56

So you both actually set your plans up in completely different ways. Rick chose to run three days a week.

  10. Sarah Hartley· Host0:59

Yes, and I ran five days a week. So you can tailor it to your preferences, how much you want to train, what distance.

  11. Andy Baddeley· Host1:05

How ambitious you want to be as well.

  12. Sarah Hartley· Host1:07

Yeah, and you even input now what your current longest run is, which is super useful because [laughs] the biggest debate that me and Rick had is that he started day one marathon training plan and built up from there.

  13. Andy Baddeley· Host1:18

    Yeah.

  14. Sarah Hartley· Host1:18

Whereas actually I did a bit of a pre-block, but it was really useful to be able to just take that and build upon it, whereas for Rick, he needed to start at smaller distances and then build up.
