Episode Summary

In this episode of Becoming UnDone® , Dr. Toby Brooks dives into the metaphor of the fourth quarter, drawing insights from both his personal experiences and a well-known parable. With a focus on understanding the importance of perseverance and recognizing growth opportunities, Toby offers a fresh perspective on the inherent guilt and responsibility often felt by coaches, mentors, and leaders when their efforts don't yield visible results. He recounts a conversation with Chris McCormick, a former Division 1 strength coach turned pastor, whose words on pressure and formation have continuously influenced Toby's outlook on personal and professional growth.

The podcast delves into the Parable of the Sower from Matthew 13, reflecting on how the farmer's lack of concern over unsuccessful seeds imparts a vital lesson on recognizing where true responsibility lies. Toby eloquently discusses how leaders shouldn't feel burdened by outcomes they can't control and highlights the significance of focusing efforts on those ready to accept change, termed as the "fourth quarter" in this context. Listeners are encouraged to recognize their own fruitful engagements, celebrate their impact, and let go of frustration over the seeds that don't take root.

[dramatic music] This is Becoming Undone. [tape rewinding] [gentle music] I want you to think back to the last time you poured everything you had into somebody and you watched it go nowhere, or worse. Maybe it was a player, a student, a kid of your own. Someone who came to you asking for help, asking for direction, asking for somebody to believe in them, and then they turned around and did the exact opposite of everything that you offered. I want you to think about what that felt like. Because if you've ever led people or taught people or coached people or loved people, you know that feeling. You know the guilt that comes with it, that quiet voice that says, "If you had just said it differently, if you had just tried a little harder, if you had just been better." That's what we're talking about today, and I promise you, by the end of this episode, you're gonna see that situation, and hopefully even yourself, a little bit differently. Now's as good a time as any to say that I'm Dr. Toby Brooks, a professor, author, speaker, and performance scientist. I spent much of the last twenty years working as an athletic trainer and a strength coach, working with athletes from the professional levels all the way down to high school and all points in between. And today, I focus on high achievers of all kinds. I study them, I interview them, I observe them to learn about what makes them different, and seeing firsthand how failures and setbacks
