[gentle music] Hi, my name's Saffron Huang. I'm a researcher on AI safety who was on the founding team of the UK AI Security Institute, and I've just worked on the BBC Radio 4 audio drama Wraith as the show's AI consultant.

My name's Adam Orton, head of cyber threat intelligence at one of the UK's largest financial institutions, and I've just finished working on the BBC Radio 4 audio drama Wraith as the show's cybersecurity consultant. My job working on the show was to advise the writers on what could really happen, as they wanted the story to be as technically accurate as possible, and I think they've done a great job of telling a story that is genuinely plausible, if somewhat scary.

Wraith is a four-part thriller about a loss of control event. That's where an AI system starts taking actions its operators never intended, and the people responsible for it can't stop it. We've actually seen small-scale versions of this already. For example, earlier this year, a senior AI safety researcher posted online that her own AI agent was deleting her emails while ignoring her commands to stop. She ended up having to physically run to her computer to shut it down.

We've seen AI blackmailing employees to avoid being shut down in a simulated test, and an AI coding agent destroying the production database at a real-world US tech company before trying to cover its tracks.
