Will this be the Donald Trump World Cup? (With Football Daily, part 1)

6/5/202630 min

We’ve got together with Americast/Newscast and Football Daily for three special episodes on what could be the most political World Cup ever.

How much will Donald Trump make it about him? Will the US-Iran war affect the tournament? And why are tickets so expensive?

We tell you everything you need to know about what’s going on off the pitch.

Adam Fleming joins from Newscast and 5 Live football commentary legend John Murray is on from Football Daily.

In this episode we look at why the US, Canada, and Mexico were picked as hosts, and who’s benefiting from the Trump-Infantino bromance.

  1. Adam Fleming· Host0:00

    Hello, Mariana.

  2. Marianna Spring· Host0:01

    Hello.

  3. Adam Fleming· Host0:01

Here we are in the same studio at the same time for once- We are ... for a special project.

  4. Marianna Spring· Host0:05

Yeah, we are talking about one of my favorite topics, football and the World Cup. Maybe one of your favorite topics.

  5. Adam Fleming· Host0:11

Well, it's about to be, yeah. [laughs] [laughs] I mean, I always get into it when it is the World Cup.

  6. Marianna Spring· Host0:15

Yeah, and also, uh, I think that this World Cup is particularly interesting, which is why we're talking about it, because it's obviously happening, um, in the US, Mexico, Canada, and there is lots to discuss in terms of geopolitics.

  7. Adam Fleming· Host0:27

And there's a lot going on between a lot of countries at the moment, and a lot of those countries are gonna be meeting in the three host countries, the US, Canada, and Mexico. And we're gonna have a bit of a theme of threes because we've brought together three podcasts. There's mine, Newscast.

  8. Marianna Spring· Host0:41

There's Americaast, and I'm not alone.

  9. Anthony Zurcher· Host0:44

Not alone. Uh, Anthony here in, in Washington, DC, in America for the American World Cup show.

  10. Adam Fleming· Host0:50

And joining us from the third legendary podcast, it's John Murray from Football Daily. Hello, John.

  11. John Murray· Guest0:55

Yes, hello, everyone. Yes, and, um, I know I'm gonna be going straight to Mexico. I know I'll be in the United States. And depends what happens in terms of who goes through, who goes out, whether I get to Canada or not, but, uh, I'll certainly be going to two of the three.

  12. Adam Fleming· Host1:09

And for those of you who cannot see John, he's got his proper football commentary lip mic.

  13. Marianna Spring· Host1:14

    Which is brilliant.

  14. Adam Fleming· Host1:14

So I feel like he's in the commentary booth already.

  15. Marianna Spring· Host1:16

    Yeah.

  16. John Murray· Guest1:16

[laughs] Well, in the football, in the Football Daily, in the Commentator's View podcast, we always do it on lip mics just to, [laughs] I think, give it that extra little bit of football commentator feel. So, uh- Mm-hmm ... old habits die hard.

  17. Adam Fleming· Host1:28

It's making me want to talk
