Why do young women hate men?

4/16/202627 min

For years, we have wrung our hands about the manosphere: the misogynist influencers like Andrew Tate exploiting a generation of disillusioned and impressionable lost boys.

But what about radicalised young women?

New, exclusive polling for the New Statesman has uncovered a huge difference in the political, economic and social outlook of women and men under 30 in Britain, created largely by women turning to the left.

Should we be worried about the “femmosphere”?

Joining me to discuss is Scarlett Maguire, founder and director of polling and research company Merlin Strategy, and our online editor Emily Lawford, whose brilliant report about this phenomenon will be out in this week’s issue of the New Statesman.

For years, we've been wringing our hands about the manosphere, the misogynist influencers like Andrew Tate exploiting a generation of disillusioned and impressionable lost boys. But what about radicalized young women? New exclusive polling for The New Statesman has uncovered a huge difference in the political, economic, and social outlook of women and men under 30 in Britain, created largely by women turning to the left. Could we be worried about the femisphere? Joining me to discuss is Scarlet McGuire, founder and director of polling and research company Merlin Strategy, and our online editor, Emily Lawford, whose brilliant report about this phenomenon will be out in this week's issue of The New Statesman. Scarlet, you conducted, um, the exclusive polling for this piece, and it- i- there are some really fascinating results. One of the starkest findings was how negatively young women feel towards men compared with the other way around. Can you unpack some of the stats for us, please?

  3. Scarlett Maguire· Guest0:59

Yeah. I think out of everything we found, this is what jumped out the most to me. Um, I think we're, we're very used to hearing about young men's negative views of young women's, um, and sort of, you know, m- misogyny amongst young men. Um, but this really struck me because we found that, you know, 72% of young men have a favorable view of young women, 7%, so not very many really, um, have an unfavorable view of young women. Um, when it comes to women under 30, though, fif- only 50% have a favorable view. The unfavorable view of men goes up to 21%.
