This History Extra podcast is sponsored by Help for Heroes. Throughout history, from the battlefields of the past to today's operational deployments, the story of Britain has been shaped by the service and sacrifice of its armed forces. Behind every campaign, every conflict, and every moment studied in the history books are the people who served. For some, the impact of service is felt long after they leave the forces, through physical injuries, mental health challenges, or the difficulty of adjusting to civilian life. For centuries, societies have relied on those who keep us safe. Today, it's our responsibility to support them in return. That's where Help for Heroes comes in. As one of the UK's leading armed forces and veterans charities, they provide life-changing support to veterans and their families, helping them rebuild their lives, recover their independence, and find the peace they deserve after service. With Armed Forces Week coming up from the 22nd to the 28th of June, it's a moment to recognize and celebrate the dedication and courage of all those who serve and have served.
