What WWE and Building a Brand have in Common: StoryTelling

6/18/20261 hr 21 min

In this episode of the GaryVee Audio Experience, I sit down to discuss the massive influence professional wrestling had on my career and how "cutting a promo" made me a better public speaker. I dive deep into why execution is the only thing that separates winners from dreamers. I also share the personal breakthrough that led me to prioritize my health at age 38 and why I believe parenting is all about building self-esteem.

Right now, we're in a time in society where unfortunately a lot of people's lives are gonna be much shittier because they decided to believe someone who's spewing hate. Every one of us have been affected by someone else's words. Do you know how insane that is?

  2. Chris Van Vliet· Host0:11

    Yeah.

  3. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest0:11

That's why I keep yapping. Whether it was your grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, brother, sister, best friend, or someone you admire, every one of you right now can rec- everyone who's watching can recall something right now that was said that had an impact on them. What did Gandhi or Martin Luther King, what did these people do? It was words, brother. Fucking words matter, 'cause you change someone's perspective. By the way, whether pro or con. This is the Gary Vee Audio Experience.

  4. Chris Van Vliet· Host0:35

[cymbals crashing] Thank you so much for coming in.

  5. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest0:38

    Thanks for having me.

  6. Chris Van Vliet· Host0:39

I've always been a fan, but when I found out that you liked wrestling, it was like that scene from Step Brothers. [laughs] "Did we just become best friends?" "Yep."

  7. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest0:47

It's real anytime you have, like, a passion or... I mean, if I literally see someone wearing a Jets hat or, like, hoodie, it happened the other day in the city, it's scary how the instant- Yes ... connection is. And if I saw someone wearing a 1980s retro Rowdy Roddy Piper T-shirt, I would get fired up, too. It's just the way the world works.

  8. Chris Van Vliet· Host1:05

I saw a guy wearing a Rock shirt recently, and I said, "Where'd you get that shirt from?" It doesn't matter where you got that shirt from.

  9. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest1:11

    [laughs] Did he do that?

  10. Chris Van Vliet· Host1:12

No, I did it to him.

  11. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest1:13

Oh, got it. Got it. Got it.

  12. Chris Van Vliet· Host1:14

He's like, "Ah, you got me."

  13. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest1:15

    That's so good.

  14. Chris Van Vliet· Host1:16

"You got me." Where does it go back to for you? When, when did you start to become a wrestling fan?

  15. Gary Vaynerchuk· Guest1:19

I'm actually trying to think about it. I mean, I'm 50, so I was fully caught up, like, you know, Hogan beating Sheik in Madison Square Garden. That's a very early memory.
