Who are you following? Everybody is following somebody or something. Put another way, everyone is a disciple. The question is not, are you a disciple? It's who or what are you a disciple of? 2,000 years ago, Jesus invited his first disciples or apprentices to come and follow me, to be with him, to slowly become like him, to do as he did in their world, and to do this as part of his new community, the church, these little families spread throughout the world. This same invitation stands before you and me today. But what does this look like in our day and age, with all its hurry, busyness, and distraction? In a time of instant gratification, how do we daily participate in the slow, patient process of spiritual formation? In a time of radical individualism, how do we resist the urge towards spirituality as project self and instead discover what can only become possible when we do life together in community? In a time that tempts us towards upward mobility, how do we surrender to the downward journey of the cross and in doing so increasingly become people of love? Following or practicing Jesus' way will require an intentional, ongoing choice to resist the patterns of our world and to adopt an entirely
