Trump tells Putin to ‘make a deal’ at G7 & 'Revenge strike' as Kyiv hits major Moscow oil refinery

6/16/202642 min

Day 1,572.

Today, as Donald Trump tells the G7 summit that “Russia should make a deal”, we examine what this apparent shift in tone from the US president could mean for Ukraine, and what President Volodymyr Zelensky can realistically hope to achieve from this crucial gathering – perhaps even a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin. We also ask how Ukrainian drones continue to penetrate Moscow’s formidable air defences, after another strike reportedly hit a Russian oil refinery and disrupted operations at airports across the capital. We report on allegations that a Russian diplomat was involved in an arson attack targeting the home of Britain’s Prime Minister, and later speak to the independent journalist leading an investigation into an Irish manufacturing plant accused of supplying components that may be helping to sustain Putin’s war machine.

[intro music] The Telegraph. [upbeat music] I'm Dom Nicholls, and this is Ukraine: The Latest. Today, as Donald Trump says at the G7 Summit in France that Russia should make a deal, we ask what this interesting shift in emphasis might mean for Ukraine and what realistically President Zelensky can hope to get out of the event. A face-to-face meeting with Putin perhaps. We ask how with all the air defense around Moscow, another Ukrainian drone attack has made it through to hit an oil refinery and close all the airports. And we report on the Russian diplomat said to be behind an arson attack on the home of Britain's prime minister. And later, we have an interview with the independent journalist who's been leading the investigation into an Irish manufacturing plant that could be playing a critical role in Putin's war machine.

  2. Volodymyr Zelenskyy· Soundbite0:51

Bravery takes you through the most unimaginable hardships to finally reward you with victory. Russia does not want peace.

  3. Ursula von der Leyen· Soundbite1:03

First, we defend with our help for Ukraine also our freedom and our European values.

  4. Donald Trump· Soundbite1:12

If I'm president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours.

  5. Dominic Nicholls· Host1:15

We are with you not just today or tomorrow, but for 100 years. We cannot, as Europeans, let Russia win in Ukraine.

  6. Volodymyr Zelenskyy· Soundbite1:25

Nobody's gonna break us. We are strong. We are Ukrainians.
