There's Always This Year (feat. Hanif Abdurraqib)

7/21/202652 min

LeBron's final basketball destination is upon us. But what is he still playing for? How can The Kid From Akron top off the legacy of playing with his own son? What dream can he manifest in "retirement"? And how's Ohio doing? In the season finale of The Step Back, Dan, Amin and Izzy call upon a genius to finish constructing the architecture of affection — or at least appreciation.

  1. Dan Le Batard· Host0:00

I've talked to a number of different athletes after they've retired, and they say, "Man, I was watching myself on film that last season, and I was wincing and cringing at how I looked out there because I'm watching it. I'm like, 'Ah, I'm not as good as I used to be.'" When LeBron watches himself, do you believe that he sees a great deal of deterioration or that he believes he can always outthink now with his guile because he's smarter than everyone else? There's certainly no deterioration in how smart he is.

  2. Amin Elhassan· Host0:30

    Right.

  3. Dan Le Batard· Host0:30

So whatever he thinks he knows more than everyone else that he can use, do you think when he watches film of himself he's seeing any deterioration?

  4. Amin Elhassan· Host0:38

I- I'm playing Kreskin now, so I'm putting myself in his brain, but I would say when he sees himself play, he absolutely knows there's things I can't do anymore. 'Cause he's talked about it. Like, "I can't do that anymore." But I do believe what you're saying, which is, "But I will find a mental workaround to my inability to physically do this."

  5. Dan Le Batard· Host0:58

    Yeah.

  6. Amin Elhassan· Host0:58

"So I will still be great," but I don't think he watches like, "I'm just as good as I was in 2013."

  7. Dan Le Batard· Host1:03

Didn't, didn't he have, didn't he have a dunk last year where the three of us were still like- Yeah ... "How is that possible in your 40s?"

  8. Amin Elhassan· Host1:09

    Yeah, yeah.

  9. Israel Gutierrez· Host1:09

Maybe just doing this podcast alone, but it makes me feel sorry for you know who? The first person who has to make a LeBron James statue. You've got so much to choose from.

  10. Amin Elhassan· Host1:17

    Oh, it'll be easy.

  11. Israel Gutierrez· Host1:19

    Easy?

  12. Amin Elhassan· Host1:20

Yeah. D- look at the one across the street. Or just don't do that.

  13. Israel Gutierrez· Host1:24

    Okay.

  14. Dan Le Batard· Host1:24

Just don't do Dwyane Wade's hideous statue.

  15. Speaker 41:28

    I'm tired of
