The unsolved murders of Lynette White and Maria Smith: Candice Fox Pt.2

3/30/202655 min

In 1974, a 17-year-old girl in Sydney answered the door to a man claiming to be an encyclopaedia salesman who carried nothing with him and left her with a chilling "full body rush" of fear.

Decades later, that woman's daughter - award-winning author Candice Fox - realised this family story aligned with the timeline of two unsolved homicides from the same neighbourhood. Candice details how this personal connection led her to report the encounter to police and attempt her own investigation into the deaths of Lynette White and Maria Smith and how these tragedies formed the inspiration for her new novel.

[upbeat music] The public has had a long-held fascination with detectives. Detectives see a side of life the average person is never exposed to. I spent thirty-four years as a cop. For twenty-five of those years, I was catching killers. That's what I did for a living. I was a homicide detective. I'm no longer just interviewing bad guys. Instead, I'm taking the public into the world in which I operated. The guests I talk to each week have amazing stories from all sides of the law. The interviews are raw and honest, just like the people I talk to. Some of the content and language might be confronting. That's because no one who comes into contact with crime is left unchanged. Join me now as I take you into this world. [upbeat music] Welcome back to part two of an entertaining chat I had with award-winning fictional crime author, Candace Fox. We're gonna talk more about her extensive and strange research that she does to write her books, and how she's finding an overlap between fiction and true crime, and two unsolved murders that have had a dramatic impact on her. Candace Fox, welcome back to part two of I Catch Killers.
