It's around 100 BC on the far western frontier of the Han Empire, China. A small royal convoy of camels and horses moves through the desert night, bound for the kingdom of Hotan in modern-day western China. At the heart of the group, riding in a covered carriage, is a young woman, her silk robes hidden beneath a travel cloak, her veil drawn tight against the wind.
