The Norwegian Method: Science vs. Soul – Kristian Blummenfelt

5/11/20261 hr 15 min

What drives someone to race four major triathlons across two and a half continents in just six weeks — and still come out sharper on the other side? In this episode, Jan sits down with Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion Kristian Blummenfelt to decode the mindset of the "Norwegian Terminator." Kristian opens up about his "kamikaze" racing schedule, the devastating mental basement of a bad race, and why his deepest fuel isn't the joy of winning, but a fear of loss. Jan also shares a personal angle: after his 2022 crash and surgeries, Blummenfelt became one of the reasons he wanted to come back — to race him one more time in 2023.They dive deep into the split with his long-time coach, the transition to being self-coached, and the truth behind the 103 VO2 Max rumors. From the aggressive racing style of his hero Alistair Brownlee to the high-stakes "barking" in the Olympic village, this is a raw look at the methodology and the madness required to redefine the limits of human endurance. Physically a terminator, but he's mentally soft as butter.

  2. Jan Frodeno· Host0:03

    Yes.

  3. Kristian Blummenfelt· Guest0:04

And, and stuff like that is just, fucking hell no. I'm fucking gonna prove that guy wrong.

  4. Jan Frodeno· Host0:08

Kristian Blumenfeld, apparently the fittest man on the planet. There is, uh, some real numbers backing that up. I was in hospital and, uh, it was kind of touch and go whether my leg would come back together. You were, like, one of the reasons why I was lying there and I was like, "Dude, I've gotta come back." If I do anything with my life, I want to race this man and I want to beat him one more time. It hurts more to lose, 'cause so many people, like, think of the great goal and think of all of this, but I've talked to a few athletes now, and at the end of the day, they're just like, "Jesus, thank God I didn't lose."

  5. Kristian Blummenfelt· Guest0:50

I've been looking at myself as the, sort of the, the guy who's supposed to win the races, and if I do, it's, uh, just like ticking off the box. Of course, it's, uh, it tastes, it tastes good. If I don't do it, it's, uh, two or three or even four weeks where just, yeah, it comes back on the mind.

  6. Jan Frodeno· Host1:07

I, I always did wonder whether I'd got in your head a little bit.

  7. Kristian Blummenfelt· Guest1:11

Y- you can't redo a race. Like, uh, the winner takes it all on the race day. I also felt it was my sort of last chance to beat you.

  8. Jan Frodeno· Host1:18

You do it for 98% of the right reasons in life, and 2% is for the assholes out there, you know? The people that say you can't do it.

  9. Kristian Blummenfelt· Guest1:25

Being on training camps with the boys and then, uh, out on the hour,
