The Family Ritual That Has Us Divided
4/26/202627 min
It’s a public holiday Monday for some, but because we love you, we’re not leaving you high and dry. We’ve picked a conversation straight from the Outlouders Facebook group that had everyone unpacking their own family dynamics: the dreaded – or in some cases beloved – family group chat.
Holly, Clare and Em are diving into a dilemma from an Outlouder who has implemented a ‘new regime’ called The Sunday Roast. The rules? Every Sunday, every family member must text their weekly highs and lows along with three photos. No explanations needed, but follow-up questions are mandatory.
So, is this a beautiful way to keep the family connected, or an administrative nightmare that makes you want to tap out?
Plus, we have some bonus reccos and things we can't stop thinking about including micro-holidays, ‘Monthly 10s’ by Julianna Salguero and Nagi’s Miso Eggplant recipe. You’re welcome.

[instrumental music] You're listening to a Mamamia podcast.
Holly Wainwright· Host0:03
Hello, and welcome Out Louders. This isn't quite like a usual show, but I am here with one Clare Stephens.
Clare Stephens· Host0:14
Hello.
Holly Wainwright· Host0:14
One Emily Vernam. We are not really here.
Clare Stephens· Host0:18
[gasps] Where- I know ... where are we?
Emily Vernem· Host0:21
It's illusion.
Holly Wainwright· Host0:21
What are, what are you doing? What are you doing?
Clare Stephens· Host0:23
Uh, I am in or on the Mornington Peninsula.
Holly Wainwright· Host0:27
Oh, you are too- Yes ... for the Sorrento Writers Festival.
Clare Stephens· Host0:29
In Sorrento. Yeah, yeah.
Holly Wainwright· Host0:30
So that's where Clare is right now- Yep ... as you're listening to this. What, what are you doing?
Emily Vernem· Host0:34
I'm recovering from playing two up- [laughs] All weekend ... at the pub. Um- [laughs] Well- ... might come in tomorrow, might not. [laughs] We'll see.
Holly Wainwright· Host0:41
[laughs] I have got a house full of guests, women and children only, and dogs. Women and children only at my house, so that's what I'm doing today. But we thought, since this is only a holiday for some bits of Australia, and most of Australia actually are just going about their business like normal, that you did deserve an episode even though ourselves and our team are on a break today. So what we've done is we've pulled a conversation out of our Out Louders group, which is what... We do love to do that, 'cause you're always having the best conversations in there. They're so smart. They are. And Facebook. And we thought we would pull out a question in there that really grabbed us, and unpick it, because the Out Louders wanted to unpick this one too, right? It's about family group chats. Who wants to read it out?
Clare Stephens· Host1:26
I can read it out. Okay.
