As wildfires tore through California, many residents were forced to flee without knowing if they would ever see their pets again. In this heartbreaking episode, Rachel Uchitel speaks with animal rescuer Jessica Davis, who entered the Palisades fire zones to search for stranded animals after entire neighborhoods had been destroyed. Jessica shares the emotional stories of desperate owners, surviving pets found hiding in the rubble, and the devastating reality facing California’s overwhelmed shelter system. From rescue efforts during active fire conditions to the growing animal crisis happening across the state, this is a powerful conversation about survival, compassion, and the bond between people and their animals.

We are working with animal services to receive and care for pets that are being displaced as well.
Rachel Uchitel· Host0:07
Can you walk me through the day you went into the Palisade fire zones and what that was like?
Jessica Davis· Guest0:12
I was receiving all these calls. [phone ringing] "I don't know if my house survived." [phone ringing] "I had to leave and my animals are still in there." Who's going in and helping the animals?
Rachel Uchitel· Host0:24
Mm.
Jessica Davis· Guest0:24
And nobody. It was nobody.
Rachel Uchitel· Host0:26
How did you get access? I mean, were you given permission, or you just figured out a way to get up there?
Jessica Davis· Guest0:31
I have to be careful before I answer that.
Rachel Uchitel· Host0:33
[laughs] How many people on the ground did you have?
Jessica Davis· Guest0:35
It was just my friend and I.
Rachel Uchitel· Host0:37
Is there one amazing story from that rescue that stands out to you that is just, like, the best thing that ever happened?
Jessica Davis· Guest0:43
We went to one home where everything was burned. A cat was in front of the house in the one tree that wasn't burned, and it was just, like, hiding there.
Rachel Uchitel· Host0:51
What is California's official plan for animals during wildfires now? Have they changed it at all? Have they made some sort of a plan?
Jessica Davis· Guest0:59
No. [laughs] No.
