Textile Materials
3/31/202656 min
Textiles are all around us, they are literally woven into nearly every part of our daily lives. From the everyday materials in the clothes we wear to the specialty materials in parachutes, spacesuits, and even bulletproof armor. They play a bigger role than we often think about but what exactly is a textile? We sit down with Kate Winning from Oxford Space to explore the world of textiles, breaking down the different types, how they are turned from fiber into usable materials, and their wide-ranging applications.

I would like to describe a field in which little has been done, but in which an enormous amount can be done. This field is not quite the same as the others in that it will tell us little of fundamental physics, but it will tell us much about the strange phenomena that occur just below our perception. In contrast to the natural philosophers of the past, the scientists of this field delve into the recesses of nature and show how she works in her hiding places. Their quest is to understand and create the imperceptible. After all, there is plenty of room at the bottom.

Hey everybody, welcome to the Materialism Podcast, an exploration of the past, present, and future of material science and engineering. My name is Andrew Falkowski. I'm a PhD student at the University of Utah, and I'm joined by my trusty co-host, Dr. Taylor Sparks of the same university, of the same department. And today, we are also joined by Kate Winning of Oxford Space Systems to help us dive into a really cool topic.

Yeah, it's ski season around here, so I'm waking up early and I'm headed up skiing, and one of the first things I do is I carefully choose my inner layers of clothing, right? I want the first one to be moisture-wicking as you're climbing up the mountain. I don't want that sweat on me making me cold. I've got the outer layer, my shell layer, which is supposed to prevent the wet snow from getting me wet from the outside. We sort of take for granted how much engineering has gone into these incredible materials that we put on our bodies every single day. And today, we're gonna dive into that,
