Testing Eric André's Music Knowledge

6/1/20267 min

Comedian, actor, and musician Eric André joins Jack for a conversation packed with punk legends, underground hip-hop, and some amazing music stories and further proves his musical knowledge runs just as deep as his comedy. A lifelong musician who started on piano at age five before moving through tuba, cello, and upright bass, Jack and André trace the artists, records, and experiences that shaped his taste and ultimately led to his own music project, BLARF, which released a new album this year. They chat Death Grips, and him being the only person ever to witness a rehearsal of theirs, the chaos and influence of Butthole Surfers, and the importance of Frank Zappa especially as someone who attended Berklee College of Music. You're also a musician.

  4. Eric André· Guest0:03

    Yep. Yeah.

  5. Jack Coyne· Host0:04

    Yep.

  6. Eric André· Guest0:05

    [censored] humiliating.

  7. Jack Coyne· Host0:06

Did you re- release an album this year?

  8. Eric André· Guest0:08

I'm in a band called Blarfu-. I put out an album called Film Scores for Films That Don't Exist. I think we sold three copies so, uh, so far.

  9. Jack Coyne· Host0:14

    So far.

  10. Eric André· Guest0:15

[laughs] Might sell a fourth one.

  11. Jack Coyne· Host0:16

Okay, I'm gonna play you songs and you have to tell me who the artist is.

  12. Eric André· Guest0:19

    Yeah, [censored] no problem, bro.

  13. Speaker 3· Soundbite0:21

    All night long.

  14. Eric André· Guest0:22

This is Lionel Richie, I think.

  15. Jack Coyne· Host0:24

    Yep.

  16. Eric André· Guest0:24

All night, all night long. It's, like, not my first record that I owned, but it's the first record I listened to.

  17. Jack Coyne· Host0:31

I didn't know that was your first record you ever had.

  18. Eric André· Guest0:33

And it was, like, the first record I ever played and listened to.

  19. Jack Coyne· Host0:36

    Uh-huh.

  20. Eric André· Guest0:36

And, like, my dad owned it. The first record I bought was Ghostbusters II soundtrack, Bobby Brown. You do deep Nardwuar research. You have, like, a billion records.

  21. Jack Coyne· Host0:44

    No.

  22. Eric André· Guest0:45

    You're like Thurston Moore.

  23. Jack Coyne· Host0:45

    No.

  24. Eric André· Guest0:46

You don't know that much about music.

  25. Jack Coyne· Host0:47

    I don't know, really.

  26. Eric André· Guest0:47

[laughs] Then why do you, why do you do this? [upbeat music] Da, da, no, this is Giant Steps. This is John Coltrane.

  27. Jack Coyne· Host0:54

    Oh.

  28. Eric André· Guest0:54

Coltrane blowing that horn. I went to the Church of John Coltrane in San Francisco when I was 15, and I don't think they played Giant Step. They played A Love Supreme.

  29. Jack Coyne· Host1:02

    Tell me about John Coltrane.

  30. Eric André· Guest1:03

John Coltrane was very good at saxophone. I don't think there's a single interview of John Coltrane in existence.

  31. Jack Coyne· Host1:10

Have you read interviews of him?

  32. Eric André· Guest1:11

    Isn't that weird?

  33. Jack Coyne· Host1:11

    Written ones?

  34. Eric André· Guest1:12

There's written ones, but not a single cabbage show, sit-down interview with John Coltrane. It's strange to me.

  35. Jack Coyne· Host1:17

Have, have you watched Miles interviews?

  36. Eric André· Guest1:19

    Tons.

  37. Jack Coyne· Host1:20

    Really?

  38. Eric André· Guest1:20

I think I know every single one.

  39. Speaker 3· Soundbite1:21

My father's rich, my momma's good-looking. Right. And I can play the blues. I never suffered, and don't intend to
