  1. Katey Rich· Host0:00

[upbeat music] Hi, everybody. It's The Prestige Junkie podcast. I am Katie Ritt, and today we are talking summer movies, and bringing in a very special and delightful guest, Sam Sanders, host of The Sam Sanders Show on KCRW. Sam, are you ready to talk about summer movies?

  2. Sam Sanders· Guest0:17

I'm so ready. I was going through your list in advance of our chat, and I was like, "Oh, I already know which ones I'm amped to see."

  3. Katey Rich· Host0:25

    Oh, yeah.

  4. Sam Sanders· Guest0:26

And there's a few on there where I'm just like, "That's for someone else. That's not for me."

  5. Katey Rich· Host0:30

[laughs] Well, we're gonna figure out what's for us and what's for other people.

  6. Sam Sanders· Guest0:33

    [laughs] Yes, yes.

  7. Katey Rich· Host0:33

We're gonna get into all of it. After Sam and I talk summer movies, including Devil Wears Prada 2, which is our first summer movie hit. What a delight. Uh, we'll bring back in my colleague Chris Rosen. He has today's interview with Yahya Abdul-Mateen, the star of Wonder Man. So we'll get into all of that and more. Welcome to the show. [upbeat music] Okay, Sam, I do kinda feel like when... In the conversations you and I had, we talked during Oscar season, and there was- Yes ... kind of this sense of like, "Oh, but summer movies are gonna come around the corner soon."

  8. Sam Sanders· Guest1:01

    Mm-hmm.

  9. Katey Rich· Host1:01

And then we really get [laughs] to come back to life.

  10. Sam Sanders· Guest1:03

You really get to do it, yes.

  11. Katey Rich· Host1:04

Is this just, like, a childhood nostalgia thing that, like, we still believe deeply in summer movie season? Or is it... Do, do you feel like it's important that, like, the movie calendar comes around, and we get ready for, like, big spectacles, sitting in air conditioning? Is there something deep and psychologically important about that?

  12. Sam Sanders· Guest1:17

I think so. I remember as a kid when everyone was going to the movies to see whatever Will Smith movie or Julia Roberts movie was the summer blockbuster that year. It felt as communal
