Silver Screen Science is our series where we explore science on the big screen and beyond. This year, we’re taking a tour through cinematic history with Old School Dinosaurs!
This episode, we compile and compare a handful of dino-themed short films from the early days of dinosaur movies: Gertie the Dinosaur, The Ghost of Slumber Mountain, and the Rite of Spring segment from Disney’s Fantasia.

Hello, listeners, and welcome back to Silver Screen Science, a special series of Common Descent where we explore the science in movies, particularly movies that have to do with paleontology, biology, geology, not just nitpicking the little things that they got right or wrong, but exploring the broad intersection of science and pop culture. This year, we are releasing Silver Screen Science all throughout the month of April with the theme of old-school dinosaurs. We are exploring some old movies with dinosaurs, old, outdated, uh, some of them not very good. Uh, we're having a whole lot of fun. [laughs] In the first episode, we started with the granddaddy of dinosaur movies, The Lost World, from 1925. This episode, we're doing something a little bit different for Silver Screen Science. We are discussing three different short films from the early history of dinosaurs in movies. In this episode, we will be discussing Gertie the Dinosaur, The Ghost of Slumber Mountain, and the Rite of Spring section of Disney's Fantasia.
