S2 Ep 14 - The Hypnotic Charm of an Iconic House

5/5/202643 min

Tim and Kevin head to Canberra to meet architect Shannon Battison, a former President of the Australian Institute of Architects, who spent a considerable amount of time designing the perfect home for her family.

Then she threw a rather large spanner in the works and bought them a new one — a 1970s experimental house designed by her mentor.

To make matters worse, it’s quite small and needs substantial repairs, or, to be more precise, it’s partially falling down.

What’s driven her to take this on? Which member of her household talked her into it? Is this both the best and worst thing she’s ever done?

And why do iconic houses seem to hypnotise people and leave them powerless to their charms?

This is your chance to find the answers to these questions and more.

Wonderful to have everyone with us wherever you may be listening, on whatever device you might be listening on. We're getting a little closer to that idea of the cassette episode.

  5. Kevin McCloud· Host0:32

I was just about to say, Tim, I was just about to say, so you may have heard in a recent episode we talked about Tim's idea of, of releasing a special Design Adventure episode, but only on cassette, and releasing it with a cassette player, obviously.

  6. Tim Ross· Host0:48

    Mm.

  7. Kevin McCloud· Host0:49

How else are you gonna listen to it, right? And you found some cheap ones.

  8. Tim Ross· Host0:52

I've been onto it. I found someone who can make them for us.

  9. Kevin McCloud· Host0:55

The actual cassettes, you mean? Yeah.

  10. Tim Ross· Host0:57

Yeah, and the turnaround for those who are interested is, is only a couple of weeks. So, um, we're still, uh, umming and ahing based on what the feedback's been, which has been okay, but I'm not sure we're ready to push go yet. But, uh, if you like the idea, uh, hello@bigdesignadventure.com, and you never know, you could be sitting at home with a Walkman and hitting the end of the tape and having to turn it over to side two for the rest of the podcast.

  11. Kevin McCloud· Host1:28

    I like that, a podcast
