Rejection, resilience and the road to prison: Claude Robinson & Vince Hurley Pt.1

4/18/20261 hr 4 min

Is the ‘tough on crime approach’ working to keep people safe?

In this episode of I Catch Killers, Gary is joined by two men from opposite sides of the law who have arrived at the same radical conclusion - the justice system is broken for everyone.

Dr Vince Hurley is a former Detective turned academic, and Claude Robinson is a former heroin addict and prisoner who now runs Rainbow Lodge, a residential center helping high-risk men transition from prison back into society. Together, they challenge everything we think we know about the justice system.

[upbeat music] The public has had a long-held fascination with detectives. Detectives see a side of life the average person is never exposed to. I spent thirty-four years as a cop. For twenty-five of those years, I was catching killers. That's what I did for a living. I was a homicide detective. I'm no longer just interviewing bad guys. Instead, I'm taking the public into the world in which I operated. The guests I talk to each week have amazing stories from all sides of the law. The interviews are raw and honest, just like the people I talk to. Some of the content and language might be confronting. That's because no one who comes into contact with crime is left unchanged. Join me now as I take you into this world. [upbeat music] If you keep doing the same things, you'll end up getting the same results. That saying could be relevant to the way we fight crime, but perhaps there is a better way. The two former guests I have back in the studio today certainly think there is. They are both innovative thinkers and are passionate about reducing crime. I have with me Claude Robertson, a former prisoner who has been shot, stabbed, and addicted to heroin, but now cares for men that no one else cares for, managing the Rainbow Lodge. He helps men transition back into the community after prison. And Dr Vince Hurley, a former detective superintendent with the New South Wales Police, who's turned into an academic, a university
