Production Buyers: What can you buy from a prop house?

7/1/202630 min

Where do you go to buy a sarcophagus? Or a pig’s head? Or a floating bath? Film sets require all kinds of things - but finding them isn’t always easy. Melloney Cunnell and Zoe Gold are both production buyers - which means that they are responsible for sourcing, renting and purchasing all the props and set dressing for a production. Mel and Zoe share stories on what it takes, and why they’re waving the flag for job sharer partnerships.

This is Out of Frame, where we celebrate and explore the work of below the line roles in film and TV. Out of Frame is produced by Platform Media for CrewHQ at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Hello, I'm Yinka Bokinni, and welcome to Out of Frame. Have you ever wondered what it takes to make a movie come to life? How does something go from an idea to a cinema blockbuster? And who are the people who make all of that happen? Well, my friends, this is the place to find out. Each week, I'll be stepping inside Crew HQ, a training center based at the heart of Warner Brothers Studios, Leavesden, to speak to incredible people from the world of film and TV, and trust me, you're gonna hear from everyone from the costume department to the script writers, the construction manager to the visual effects crew. This is an insight into the film industry like you've never heard before. This is Out of Frame. [upbeat music] When you think about your favorite film, one of the first things you might picture is the location. Whether it's a high-stakes action movie or a terrifying horror, it's the set that really takes you into a different world. But what does it take to actually pull a set together? Where are all the bits and pieces sourced from? And how much does all of that stuff cost? In this episode, I'm joined by not one, but two incredible people, production buyers Melanie Cunnell and Zoe Gold, who can answer all of these questions and much more. Mel and Zoe work alongside each other as job share partners. This just means they split their job role and responsibilities equally, but we'll get into exactly how that works a little later.
