Presenting: Dead Pilots Society table read of "Gimme Five" by Craig Thomas & Carter Bays

5/21/202656 min

On another very special Bonus Episode of HWMYM, we’re bringing you a table read of Gimme Five, a second pilot that Craig and Carter (wrote not long after HIMYM ended). And once again, this pilot never got made (until now!). They co-wrote this pilot with legendary writer Peter Tolan, whose credits include The Larry Sanders Show, Rescue Me, Analyze This, Analyze That, and many more. Here's the log line: It's 1985, and Gimme Five is the number two family sitcom in America. But behind the scenes of this feel-good show is a dysfunctional workplace family on the verge of self-destruction. Showrunner Cliff McConnell must somehow keep it together and keep being funny in the midst of his newborn son's health crisis. Sharp, outrageous, and wildly funny, Gimme Five gives a behind-the-scenes look at comedy writing that feels both absurd and strangely authentic. It may also be one of the funniest pilots ever featured on Dead Pilots Society.   Major Content Warning salute — Definitely think twice about listening to this one with small children in the room. You may hear something that offends you early on in this pilot, but please stick with it. Our cast for the show includes Taran Killam (SNL, High Potential, Stumble), Chris Diamantopoulos (Beavis and Butthead, Silicon Valley), Scott Foley (Scandal, Scream 7), Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs), Tami Sagher (Inside Amy Schumer), Chris DiStefano (stand up), James Urbaniak (Venture Brothers), Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time, Shrinking), Cyrina Fiallo (High Potential, 911 Lonestar), Alyssa Limperis (What We Do In the Shadows), Burl Moseley (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). Please.

  5. Josh Radnor· Host0:06

Here's what it is. I wanna look great- Yeah ... but I don't wanna look like I put any effort into it at all.

  6. Craig Thomas· Host0:13

    Oh, yes.

  7. Josh Radnor· Host0:14

Do you know what I'm saying?

  8. Craig Thomas· Host0:15

    [laughs] Yeah, that's the dream.

  9. Josh Radnor· Host0:17

    That's, that's what you want?

  10. Craig Thomas· Host0:18

    That's what you want.

  11. Josh Radnor· Host0:19

I just want people, "Oh, this, I just rolled out of be- I don't, no, it doesn't even... Oh, I just grabbed it off the..." You know?

  12. Craig Thomas· Host0:25

I, yeah, I do know. I do know. I never, I've, I almost never look that way because it looks e- either like I tried zero or I tried really, really way too hard.

  13. Josh Radnor· Host0:33

[laughs] [laughs] I would say comedy writers out of all of show biz probably need- [laughs] ... the most fashion help, would you say?

  14. Craig Thomas· Host0:41

A, how dare you, and B, yes. [laughs] And also forget about A.

  15. Josh Radnor· Host0:46

How, how have you been, how have you been getting help lately?

  16. Craig Thomas· Host0:48

So here's what's been really, really helpful. Quince. Quince has come into our lives because of this podcast, and it's a thing of beauty. I, we have gotten, uh, a couple batches of really, really nice things from Quince, one in the winter, and now it's springtime. And what I, the problem I tried to solve with the stuff I chose for Quince, they let us choose a few items, uh, I just feel like I have nothing that looks what you just described. I have nothing in my spring and summer wardrobe that looks kind of like I didn't try too hard, but it looks nice.

  17. Josh Radnor· Host1:18

    Yeah.

  18. Craig Thomas· Host1:18

It's just like I just have crappy T-shirts or, like, really uncomfortable, like, button-downs that are for, like, a fancy event that I don't look that good in. This hits exactly the sweet spot you're talking about, Josh. Very comfortable, like, just, like,
