Politics Expert on the Two-Party System Collapse, the Rise of One Nation & Gen Z’s Voting Shift

5/7/202658 min

In this conversation, no.1 political strategist and pollster Kos Samaras explains how Australia’s political landscape is fragmenting beyond recognition.

He reveals why traditional Liberal and Labor voters are abandoning both major parties, how disillusioned Australians are turning to One Nation and the Greens, and why the country is heading toward a more divided political future.

From the collapse of manufacturing in regional Australia to the psychological impact of Melbourne’s lockdowns, Samaras breaks down the economic, cultural and generational forces reshaping Australian democracy. He also explores why younger Australians are losing faith in the system, why many no longer believe they can afford children or home ownership, and how social media algorithms are accelerating political polarisation across the country.

What did you think of the Victorian, um, by-election on the weekend?

  4. Kos Samaras· Guest0:10

Nothing really surprised me there, really. Uh, the poor areas of, of Nepean. For, for your listeners, uh, Nepean's a traditionally blue ribbon Liberal seat, has been for a long time. Labor won it once in a landslide. Uh, 75% of its population lives within, uh, two kilometers of the beach. Um, so it's prime real estate down there Wow Um, yeah, lots and lots of assetted wealth and- Older? Much older. Very wealthy. You know, multi-million dollar mansions. It is a, it is a really nice part of the world So they should never have lost it No, correct Did they lose ground? They lost, uh, they lost a seat in 2018 during the landslide against Dan, Dan Andrews, and, you know, I was working for, for them at the time, and I still can't figure out how they, how they lost that, as in when I was working for the Labor side Right Still can't work out how we won that seat, 'cause it's just on paper deep blue. Except for some suburbs, like Rosebud, um, and- Within, within the ward, within the area Within the area, right, and that's further away from the water, more blue collar, pe- a lot of people working with their hands, standing on their feet, and, uh, One Nation's primary there was 40% In that particular suburb You know, the... Yes. Right? Which then tells me, yeah, of course, you know, the, the, the punters
