Pauline’s poll for PM, mysterious media silence over young woman’s death + radio boss gropes woman

6/2/20261 hr 2 min

Should we be worried about Pauline Hanson’s latest poll surge? The Etterati asked, so we separate genuine trends from poll hysteria.

We also unpack the shocking moment a radio boss groped his employee on stage at Australia’s biggest audio awards night - we saw it happen!

Plus, a 25-year-old woman moved to Australia, started a new job, and weeks later she was dead. Her family is demanding answers, protests have been held, and questions have been raised in Kenya's parliament — so why has Australian media not covered it?

And finally, Jan recommends a powerful essay on how the press helped manufacture consent for Gaza’s genocide, while Antoinette finds an unlikely antidote to Karl Stefanovic's podcast pivot.

  1. Jan Fran· Host0:00

[upbeat music] Hello, and welcome to We Used to Be Journos, the podcast where two media insiders break down broken news. My name is Jan Fran, and I am sitting across from my co-host, Antoinette Lattouf. How are you?

  2. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:15

I am very well, and I'm not as bored as your son was- [laughs] ... over the weekend, Jan.

  3. Jan Fran· Host0:19

    You saw that, did you?

  4. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:20

[laughs] Yeah. [laughs] You took him to see your Archibald portrait- Mm ... and he was like, "What is this? I, I see this chick every day. I'm bored."

  5. Jan Fran· Host0:27

Yeah, I'm very bored. He's notoriously anti-art- [laughs] ... my four-year-old son. I did, I thought it might be a nice outing to take my son to see my literal portrait in the Archibald Prize. Uh, but no, he wasn't having any of it. He wasn't particularly enthused by the Archibalds this year. Sorry, art and artists.

  6. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:45

Well, I heard from a soccer mom on the weekend. She said, "Oh, um, I saw you mentioned at the Archibalds."

  7. Jan Fran· Host0:52

Soccer mom's very specific. Was it an actual soccer mom?

  8. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:54

    Yeah.

  9. Jan Fran· Host0:55

    At, at soccer?

  10. Antoinette Lattouf· Host0:55

I was at soccer. [laughs] I was at soccer on the weekend. She comes up to me on the sideline. I try and ... I always stand away from everybody so I don't have to talk to anybody.

  11. Jan Fran· Host1:03

    Right.

  12. Antoinette Lattouf· Host1:03

Um, and so she comes and says, "I was at the, I was at the Archibalds on the weekend, and I saw you mentioned." And I was like, "No, I had my portrait painted, but I'm-" Didn't make it into the finals ... I didn't make it. But I said, "My co-host and friend, Jan Fran did." She goes, "Oh, yes, wearing the red coat."

  13. Jan Fran· Host1:18

    Yes.

  14. Antoinette Lattouf· Host1:18

And I was, I was, "Oh," I'm thinking, "They must have mentioned... Did they mention me or @media or whatever?"

  15. Jan Fran· Host1:23

Uh, yeah, so there's like a little ex- explanation next to each portrait about, you know, who the subject is- Yeah ... and why the artist chose to paint the subject. And
