A Lenny Henry, he asked for 18 trillion pounds.

Yeah. Put me in touch with his agent. People who had no responsibility for slavery would be paying people who never experienced slavery. What can be rational about that? It's really a manipulation of the past. Whilst 12 million slaves were shipped across the Atlantic, 17 million more were taken from West Africa, across the Sahara, and sold into the Ottoman Empire and into Arab lands.

What is Britishness?
Lawrence Goldman· Guest0:33
It's a remarkable history of peaceful evolution. That makes us quite unlike the Russians or the French or the Germans. We've twice exhausted ourselves, our blood, our treasure, in fighting militarism and anti-democracy in two world wars. We've taught the world parliamentary democracy. These are remarkable attributes of Britishness. We should be more aware of them. We should be more proud of them. It's a bit like adolescents attacking their parents. They're flailing around, attacking those who founded them, who drew the map, who transferred their technology, who gave them the institutions. Somehow we're to blame. Our generosity and our sympathy for others is often exploited, and we bend over backwards to criticize ourselves and to accommodate others. Perhaps it's time to be rather tougher.
