    He was convinced that the charges had to be thrown out because police hadn't read him his Miranda rights. [laughs] And he kept saying things like, "They haven't read my rights. They didn't say it like they do in the movies. I'm pleading the Fifth." [laughs] That language comes straight from American television. In his mind, lawyers and prosecutors are meant to be like gladiators- Yeah ... locked in mortal combat- Yeah. [laughs] ... in some kind of Roman Colosseum.

    Yeah. [gentle music] I'm Andrew Rule. This is Life and Crimes. Today we have another guest. We've had a few guests lately, and today it is Sydney-based criminal lawyer. He's also other sorts of lawyer, but we're talking to him about crime. His name is Tony Toke. He was born in Melbourne and started out here as a youngster and moved to Sydney. So he has a foot planted firmly in each of those great cities, and always takes an interest in what's happening on both sides of the Murray. Welcome to Life and Crimes, Tony.
