    Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Hurst. President Trump is imposing a new set of tariffs that went into effect today, putting ten to twelve and a half percent tariffs on goods from dozens of the US's major trading partners. This as a temporary blanket tariff expires. NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben has more.

    The new tariffs cover fifty-nine countries and the European Union. According to the US Trade Representative's office, more than ninety-nine percent of US imports come from those economies. However, a broad swath of goods are exempted, including energy. The tariffs were created under a law that allows tariffs against countries with unfair trade practices. The administration says the new tariffs are on economies that import goods made with forced labor. The tariffs go into effect at the same time that a global blanket tariff of ten percent expires. The administration has imposed tariffs using several laws after the Supreme Court ruled a raft of Trump's tariffs unlawful in February. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News.
