Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. On Capitol Hill, House lawmakers have advanced a bill that would extend government funding until after the midterm elections, sending the package to the Senate on a vote of two hundred twenty to two hundred five. Republican Majority Leader John Thune says the Senate will act before leaving town for the August recess. Here's NPR's Eric McDaniel.

Republicans want to avoid a third government shutdown, this one coming just ahead of the midterm elections. Democrats have forced two record-breaking shutdowns since President Trump began a second term, the first over federal subsidies for health insurance plans and the second over funding for the president's immigration enforcement agenda after federal personnel killed Americans in Minnesota earlier this year. Leader Thune says he'll work on a different version of the funding extension in order to attract needed support from Senate Democrats. If that doesn't pan out, he has a plan to pass a funding extension on a party line vote, avoiding the chamber's typical 60-vote threshold using a parliamentary quirk known as reconciliation.
