Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Wildfire smoke from Canada is once again driving air quality to unhealthy levels across a wide stretch of the United States. Alerts are in effect from the Great Lakes through parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. Frank Pereira with the National Weather Service says the smoke will remain widespread today.

Conditions are still looking pretty, pretty bad from the Great Lakes southeastward through the mid-Atlantic, and that would include, uh, good portions of New York, parts of New England, all the way down into, uh, the northern mid-Atlantic, including the Baltimore/Washington area, and that's gonna remain the case here through the day.

Rain moving through parts of the region could help clear some of the smoke and improve air quality, but any relief is expected to be uneven, with unhealthy conditions lingering in many areas. The former spouse of the federal immigration officer who fatally shot a Colombian national during a vehicle stop in Maine on Monday says he has a history of violence and domestic abuse.
