Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. The US and Iran are vying for control over the Strait of Hormuz amid a new wave of attacks. Stocks open mixed as crude oil prices jump. NPR's Scott Horsley reports the Dow rose about one hundred forty-nine points in early trading.

Continued fighting in and around the Strait of Hormuz has pushed oil prices higher. The international benchmark's approaching eighty dollars a barrel. AAA says the average price of regular gas in the US is now three dollars eighty-seven cents a gallon. That's up about eight cents from a week ago, but twenty-one cents lower than this time last month. Gasoline consumption in the US has inched up despite the high price, but global demand for petroleum products is expected to fall this year for the first time since the pandemic downturn six years ago. The International Energy Agency projects that worldwide consumption of oil will drop by about a million barrels per day. Asian stocks were mixed overnight, up in Hong Kong but down in Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

Washington's medical examiner's office initially concludes that Senator Lindsey Graham died of an aortic dissection or tear. Graham died unexpectedly on Saturday at the age of seventy-one. He's being remembered for his robust stance on US foreign policy. Graham served in the Senate for twenty-three years. NPR's Eric McDaniel says the Republican was running for re-election.
