Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Louise Schiavone. Four-term U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has died from a brief and sudden illness, his Senate office says. The South Carolina Republican died last night, two days after marking his seventy-first birthday. The day before he died, Graham was in Ukraine meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. NPR's Joanna Kakissis tells us the Ukrainian president says his nation has lost a powerful advocate.

Writing on social media, Zelenskyy said he was deeply saddened by Graham's death and called him a true defender of freedom. Graham visited Ukraine 10 times since Russia's full-scale invasion in February twenty twenty-two. His last visit was just last week. He met with Zelenskyy and toured a drone production facility. On Friday, Graham told reporters in Kyiv that the White House was ready to support a new sanctions bill on Russia.
