The celebration was delayed for two hours because of a major storm system moving nearby. Several wea- severe weather canceled Fourth of July celebrations in a number of other cities, including Hartford, Connecticut, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The U.S. territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are bracing for a monster typhoon that forecasters say could have catastrophic effects on the islands. Member station KPRG's Dana Williams reports from Guam.

With winds of a hundred and fifty-five miles per hour, Super Typhoon Bavi is expected to intensify over the next twenty-four hours before passing near the island of Rota in the Western Pacific, about fifty miles north of Andersen Air Force Base on Guam. Residents spent the July Fourth weekend gathering supplies, gassing up vehicles, and securing their homes. Local governments have opened emergency shelters, flights have been canceled, and seaports have suspended commercial operations.
