Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump did not get what he wanted when it comes to birthright citizenship. U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday rejected his day one executive order that sought to deny citizenship to children born to undocumented or temporary residents. NPR's Carrie Johnson says the court relied on a long-settled understanding of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Not a complete surprise given the way the oral argument went in this case. Remember, Chief Justice John Roberts actually said to the Solicitor General John Sauer, um, uh, "It may be a different world with respect to, uh, people being able to travel to the United States way more easily than they did in the 1890s, but it's the same Constitution, the same Fourteenth Amendment."

The court did give Trump something to celebrate. The justices allowed states to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls' and women's sports at publicly funded schools. Capitol Hill, the Republican-led House started the July Fourth holiday break early. GOP leaders sent House members home after a group of hardliners blocked the annual defense bill, demanding Senate passage of President Trump's voter ID legislation. Tuesday's primaries in Democratic-leaning Colorado provided some more data points that could come into play in the November elections. NPR's Sage Miller reports.
