Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President Trump is doubling down on his effort to overhaul elections. NPR's Franco Ordoñez reports the latest push comes as the Supreme Court rules that mail-in ballots can be counted after Election Day.

President Trump has long sought to crack down on mail-in voting. He took to social media soon after the ruling, calling it a tremendous loss, and he argued that it was even more reason for members of Congress to pass his election legislation, which limits mail-in ballots and requires proof of citizenship for voting. He wrote, quote, "There is only one reason to oppose: cheating." The fight over the election legislation has deepened cracks between Trump and Republican leaders in the Senate, who've tried to explain to the president that they simply don't have the votes to pass the legislation and that the fight is also hurting Republicans as they look to turn the focus to the economy ahead of the midterm elections.
