Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. The US and Iran launched fresh volleys Monday. US officials say the military destroyed several small Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Iranians attacked US ships protecting oil tankers and an oil port in the United Arab Emirates. NPR's Quil Lawrence reports on the attacks amid President Trump's latest effort to reopen the strait.

Admiral Brad Cooper said that US forces are working to create a safe passage for stranded oil tankers through the strait, and that this is a defensive mission on behalf of the international community affected by Iran's blockade. Speaking to reporters by phone, he said US warships and tankers took no damage.

I can confirm there's been no US military ships hit. Uh, and I wouldn't, I wouldn't go into details of the, whether the ceasefire is over or not.

The ceasefire question is key to the debate over whether the war with Iran has passed the 60-day mark and would require congressional approval under the War Powers Resolution. Last week, President Trump said in a letter to Congress that the ceasefire meant the war was, quote, "terminated" before the 60-day mark, despite ongoing naval blockades, which are acts of war. The US Supreme Court has at least temporarily restored access to the abortion pill mifepristone. The court put a one-week hold on a federal court ruling last week that banned mifepristone from being prescribed through telemedicine and dispensed through the mail. NPR's Selena Simmons-Duffin.
