NHL Mock Draft: If we were the GM…

5/29/202642 min

We are less than a month away from the NHL Draft and on today’s episode the guys deep dive into their annual GM mock, where they play general manager for every first round pick, making decisions based on their own lists and their given team’s needs. Before that, they take a look at Corey’s scouts and execs survey to get a sense of where the league is on the draft’s top 10 picks, and to close things out, they break down this year’s goalie and overager crop.

[upbeat music] Hey, everybody, Max Boldman here alongside The Athletic's Corey Proman and Scott Wheeler, and Flow Hockey's Chris Peters for another episode of the Athletic Hockey Show Prospect Series. Packed show today. We got a couple of mock drafts to get to, uh, and, and actually a lot to dive into on those. Uh, we're gonna talk about the goalies of this draft class. We're gonna talk about the overages of this draft class. So let's get right into it, Corey, and I wanna start with the scout and exec, uh, poll mock draft that you did this week, 'cause it's a little different take on it, right? I mean, I, I know all of your guys's work is, to some extent, informed by conversations you're having around the league. This one, you, you really turn it over to the scouts and the execs to make the picks or, or project the picks, I should say. Uh, and what was your biggest takeaway from how it went?

  3. Corey Pronman· Host1:04

Yeah. The idea was inspired, by the way, by our NFL writer, Mike Sando. Pretty much stole the idea from him and applied it on, uh, on the hockey side.

  4. Max Bultman· Host1:11

    Good guy to copy.

  5. Corey Pronman· Host1:12

Yeah, and, uh, I thought it went really well. I was worried that there wouldn't be, like, enough consensus, and you just get a bunch of votes for a bunch of different players. But I found doing the exercise, uh, you c- we did, like, a table at the bottom there that you could kind of see. You saw that there was kind of a clear trend among the league evaluators
