Money Is The Wrong Target... | Trevor Bauer | DSH #1940
4/29/202651 min
Baseball looks simple until you hear how elite pitchers actually think. Trevor Bauer breaks down the science behind pitching, injury risk, pitch design, tunneling, and why hitters have almost no time to react. From 95 mph fastballs to designing pitches in a lab, Trevor explains why baseball is way more mental, technical, and brutal than most fans realize. He also talks about playing in Mexico, the pitch clock, why pitchers get hurt, the rise of younger players, Shohei Ohtani’s real value, and the obsession that helped him become a Cy Young winner. This is not just a baseball conversation. It’s about discipline, data, obsession, and what it really takes to become elite. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Could Sean Hit Trevor Bauer? 5:55 Mexican Baseball Is Wild 8:32 Why Pitchers Get Injured 12:08 Baseball Prime Years 14:23 Trevor’s Extreme Diet Routine 16:07 The Pitch Clock Problem 18:35 Why Ohtani Is Underpaid 23:07 How Trevor Built a New Pitch 30:38 Chasing the Cy Young 45:32 Why Hitting Is Almost Impossible 🧠 What You’ll Learn ⚾ Why hitting a 95 mph fastball is almost impossible 🧠 How elite pitchers hide what pitch is coming 🔬 How Trevor Bauer designs pitches using physics 🚨 Why the pitch clock may increase injury risk 💰 Why Shohei Ohtani may actually be underpaid 🏆 What drove Trevor to chase the Cy Young for 10 years 🇲🇽 Why Mexican baseball has a completely different energy 💪 Why health matters more than raw talent in sports 🎯 How one new pitch changed Trevor’s entire career 👀 Why some hitters can “see” certain pitchers better 🎙️ APPLY OR CONNECT 👉 Interested in being a guest? Data shows shorter time in between, like, explosive movements increases injury risk. Tunneling. So if you can, like... If you imagine, like, a tunnel, all your pitches are going down the tunnel, and then at some point on the tunnel, like, if you're driving down the tunnel, there's, like, exit that comes off this way or an exit goes off that way. That's like the different pitch movements. You're in the same tunnel for part of the flight, pitches go off in different directions, but it's split off too late for hitters to really be able to make many adjustments. So that's, like, the gold standard. No tipping, same exact delivery, same exact tunnel, different movements.

You're playing in men's league?
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:34
Yeah. Every now and then I go out and play men's leagues, like, the softball.
Sean Kelly· Host0:37
Oh, really?
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:38
Yeah.
Sean Kelly· Host0:38
That's not fair for people.
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:39
[laughs] Well, we handicap ourselves. We'll play, like, 4v9.
Sean Kelly· Host0:42
Oh, okay.
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:43
Yeah. And see... Yeah, so we have basically no defenders.
Sean Kelly· Host0:45
So you just have the bases, but no outfielders?
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:47
Basically, yeah.
Sean Kelly· Host0:48
I made a bet with my friend. I ha- I have to ask you this. If you pitched 50 times to me, would I be able to make contact with the ball?
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:54
Did you play baseball at all?
Sean Kelly· Host0:56
When I was super young.
Trevor Bauer· Guest0:57
So, like, how old were you when you last played?
Sean Kelly· Host0:59
Like, 10.
Trevor Bauer· Guest1:00
Okay. Um, 50 times, are you just talking, like, put the ball in play?
Sean Kelly· Host1:05
It has to be inbounds, yeah.
Trevor Bauer· Guest1:06
In play? Yeah, I think i- one out of 50, you'd probably put it in play.
Sean Kelly· Host1:09
Okay.
Trevor Bauer· Guest1:10
Yeah, like, the first 10 or 15, you'd struggle, and then, like, you'd kind of get adapted to it. And then I don't think you're getting a hit, but I mean, you'd probably put one in play.
Sean Kelly· Host1:19
Okay. You hear that, Charlie? I was right. [laughs] [laughs] You didn't think I could do it.
Trevor Bauer· Guest1:22
My agent, actually, so she's... She played, like, zero baseball, maybe, like, a year of T-ball or something
