6/6/20261 hr 6 min

In front of an audience at the Newport Beach TV Fest, the trailblazing writer/director/producer/actress reflects on her time on 'The Office' and how it shaped the series she subsequently created, including 'The Mindy Project,' 'Never Have I Ever' and 'The Sex Lives of College Girls'; the sense of responsibility and pressure that comes with being an American-Indian creator and making shows with American-Indian protagonists; and why she has enjoyed working strictly behind-the-camera on her most recent series.

I'm Scott Feinberg, executive editor at The Hollywood Reporter and the host of its Awards Chatter podcast for which tonight's conversation is being recorded. I'm so happy to be back here at the Newport Beach TV Festival this year to speak with the recipient of its Artist of Distinction Award. She is a writer, director, producer, and actress who has proven to be one of the most gifted and influential creative voices of her generation. At just 24, she became a writer for and an actress on NBC's The Office. She was the only woman in the writers' room at that time, and ultimately penned more episodes than any other writer over the course of her eight seasons with the show, during which she also became the first woman of color to be nominated in any writing category at the Emmys.
