Michael Carrick doesn’t get enough credit for everything he’s dealt with at Man United
5/4/202641 min
Fresh from another victory over rivals Liverpool, Rio is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to discuss the performance of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, the reasons people still don’t back Michael Carrick for the job and the way fans responded to Manchester United winning at Old Trafford.
Rio and Ste drill down into what has changed in Kobbie Mainoo’s game since the departure of Ruben Amorim and the role that Carrick has played in that.
Another young English player made a huge impact on Arsenal’s midfield at the weekend which leads Rio to say he’s “baffled” by the lack of opportunities that Myles Lewis-Skelly has been given this season.
And then the trio spin the Carrick narrative on its head - instead of focusing on the things he’s not done or achieved as a manager - they detail all of the things that he has dealt with that doesn’t get enough credit.
Plus, Rio fills the lads in on the latest about his spat with former England team mate Jamie Carragher.

He's beat probably the best team of this era. He's beat the potential champions away. He's beaten the world club champions away, and he's gone and beat the current champions of the Premier League again. Like, and we're still going, "Yeah, but..." He's had to coach a team out of playing a particular style of football into a new style of football now.
Joel Beya· Host0:22
Oh, yeah.
Stephen Howson· Panelist0:22
The squad is built to play 3-4-3.
Rio Ferdinand· Host0:24
Yeah.
Stephen Howson· Panelist0:24
You've got Mbeumo and Cunha, not really natural wingers.
Rio Ferdinand· Host0:27
That's what I'm saying. Like, just doesn't get any credit for that, which is mad. It just gets brushed off as though he hasn't got enough experience in the big time. [upbeat music] Yes, guys, welcome to another episode of Rio Presents, brought to you by our partners Craftid. Steve House and Joel Beya are with me as usual, guys. What's happening, man? How you doing? You good?
Joel Beya· Host0:50
Well, listen, we've all had a good weekend. But before we start talking about the Liverpool win and the Arsenal win, I wanna know what the heck is going on with you and Jamie Carragher. [laughs] What happened- what happened, bruv?
Rio Ferdinand· Host1:04
He just came on smoke out of nowhere, like. All I've done is put a picture up and say, "Caption this." The only... He was in the background of the picture of me celebrating someone else's goal, which I love doing, and I'll do it again a million times over if I had the opportunity, right?
Joel Beya· Host1:17
Yeah.
Rio Ferdinand· Host1:17
I'm like, "How can you get so triggered, like?" Like, he was rattled. Rattled. Super rattled out of nowhere. I don't, I just don't get it. Really, do you know what? I'll... Jamie,
